This country has experienced the worst housing crash since the Great Depression, and now it is being said that we may be headed towards a housing shortage.

There were about 672,000 new homes being built in April, which was less than half the overall rate needed to meet the population growth.

James Gaines, a real estate economist said:  “It is ironic, but there is a growing consensus that there may be a new housing shortage coming.”

But due to the weak economy, this shortage is being overlooked by the lack of home buying.

However, experts still insist that once the job market rebounds people will be building homes at a faster pace.

If this large demand of homes is unleashed on an unprepared market, this could cause a serious shortage and will most likely raise local prices.

Of course, those doubting that this new bubble will burst are doing so based on the large shadow and housing inventory overhang.

Approximately 7 million homes are now vacant but are not for sale which many contend will offset an increased demand.

Ordinarily, home builders can generally react quickly to meet surges in demand.

But factors such as getting loans and the industry readjusting to many builders who went out of business are preventing them from accomplishing this tremendous task.

Now with a new regulatory environment, building homes will be more difficult and more expensive to do.
